The fight for the environment unites

"Based on interviews with applicants who have received education, 54 people were selected to participate in summer expedition projects in the villages of Salemal and Seyakha, as well as on the island of Vilkitsky. Among them are both beginners and experienced volunteers. Volunteers from 20 regions of Russia and three countries - Kazakhstan, the Czech Republic and Belarus-will take part in the expeditions to Yamal. On the island of Vilkitsky, the guys plan to prepare the collected metal for export, " the press service reported.

The government said that eco-volunteers listened to lectures in the format of webinars for a month and a half, solved tests on ecology, getting an idea about the Arctic as a whole and environmental activities in the territory of Yamal.

The total duration of the lectures was more than 30 hours

"We managed to improve the process of selecting volunteers to participate in our expeditions, to give them enough knowledge and skills to work successfully in the harsh conditions of the Arctic. There are a lot of applicants, but thanks to the educational program and psychological testing, it is possible to choose the most prepared, "the press service quotes the words of the head of the public organization" Green Arctic " Yevgeny Rozhkovsky.

Industrial waste accumulated in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District, including on the island of Vilkitsky, after the first wave of intensive development of Yamal, which occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. Then, when developing hydrocarbon deposits, the environmental standards of industrial activity were less strict, as a result, a large number of so-called objects of accumulated damage were formed. Since 2017, the Green Arctic volunteers have been carrying out ecological cleaning of the cluttered territories of the uninhabited Vilkitsky Island in the Kara Sea. During four years of work on the island, the volunteers managed to extract more than 500 tons of scrap metal and other waste, collect more than 4,000 barrels of fuel and dismantle 6 km of pipeline.
